What Is Tile Backer Board?

Tile backer board is made from a cement board that has been rolled with a liquid waterproofing membrane. This membrane is then bonded to the cement board with thin-set adhesive. Tile backer board is a double-sided construction with a water-resistant face on both sides. This face serves as an integrated waterproofing membrane and allows the tile and grout to adhere to it without leaking.

Before you begin a tiled shower niche project, you must prepare the backer board. If you're using a cement backer board, make sure to cover all seams with an alkaline-resistant 4-inch mesh tape. This will help prevent leakage of the cement board. You should also apply waterproofing liquid on the cement board.
First, you must measure the width of the opening. Ideally, it should be about one tile wide. Using a narrow niche eliminates the need for "L" cuts in the tiles and helps align the tile with the grout line. If the niche is too wide, it will look awkward.
Next, cut the backer board according to its size. For a three-foot-long niche, you need three-three-quarter-inch strips. Place one strip at the top and the other one on each side. Then cut the strips into the desired length.

foam tile backer board

Foam tile backer board is a kind of material used in tiling. It has excellent stiffness and strength, so it can prevent movement of tiles during assembly. In addition, it does not absorb moisture like cement board. Hence, you can use this type of board outdoors. Besides, it is more affordable than cement board.
There are two kinds of foam tile backer boards: those that can be used on walls, and those that can be used on shower niches. You can choose a waterproof one, or a non-water-resistant one. But remember that a waterproof board does not solve both issues. You may need a mold-resistant tile backer board, if you are worried about moisture transmission. But if you follow the correct construction methods, you can avoid mold.
The traditional tile backer board is made of gypsum. These boards have a tendency to absorb moisture, which causes delamination. This occurs when the paper face and the gypsum core fail to bond. However, newer shower wall boards do not suffer from this problem. These boards have pre-bonded textured surfaces, which stick to the tile.

When tiling, it's crucial to use a good quality tile backer board. It helps to provide a level foundation for tile installation and will prevent the tiles from shifting. There are different types of tile backer board that are suitable for different applications, including floors and walls. Curved backer boards are great for corners and awkward spots where a straight backer board can't be used.
The most common type of tile backer board is 1/2-inch in thickness. However, for curved surfaces, you can use 1/4-inch backer board. On the other hand, for vertical surfaces, you can use 5/8-inch backer board. These types of tile backer boards are similar to Type X drywall.
Cement-based tile backer boards should have some moisture barrier to prevent mold and mildew. The moisture barrier can come in the form of a vapor barrier, a waterproofing membrane on the board, or a paint-on liquid. However, the edges of cement board can be quite difficult to work with, so you should be careful when installing them.

floor tile backer board

The backer board used for floor tile installation must be waterproof and sealed properly. Otherwise, water might penetrate the surface of the board and cause mold growth on the interior floors. The board must also be flat and flush with the surrounding surfaces. It is best to install the backer board before tiling to ensure that it will stay in place. It is usually recommended to purchase thicker backer boards for walls and floors, rather than thin ones. Thinner boards are easier to scratch and do not work well for projects like floor tiles.
The backer board used for floor tile is composed of cement or fiberglass. It provides a waterproof surface and is ideal for wet rooms and shower surrounds. It can also be used on exterior jobs. Several manufacturers manufacture cement and fiberglass board backer boards.
